February & March recap

wallaceskye

February turned out to be an exhilarating month! My first race of the month was a 2XU Triathlon Series sprint distance event, where I clinched the win in the elite category. It felt amazing to finally take the tape after years of competing in the series and looking up to others who achieved victory and hoping one day I could maybe do the same. The winning streak continued as I raced at Husky Half Distance, where I secured 1st place overall age group and 3rd place overall, including pros. It was one of those rare days when everything clicked perfectly, leaving me on a high!

March, however, proved to be a bit more challenging. The month began on a positive note with another 2XU race, where I finished 2nd overall. Given the fatigue from the Husky race, I was pleased with this performance. Unfortunately, the next two races didn’t go as planned.

First, I competed in the Sid James 100km race, but extreme heat—over 40 degrees—caused both of my tyres to expand and pop in transition, forcing me to withdraw. I was devastated, especially since I had been feeling strong. However, I used this setback as motivation for the next race and made the most of my time in the beautiful Victor Harbor.

A few weeks later, I raced at Ironman 70.3 Geelong, aiming to redeem myself and finish in the top 3 overall age group. I was on track until about 70km into the bike leg, when I encountered another dreaded puncture. Although this was frustrating, I managed to keep racing after a tyre change and was proud of how I finished strong despite not reaching my initial goals. Geelong marked the end of my racing season, and while it wasn’t the finish I had hoped for, it provided plenty of motivation for off-season training.

Away from racing, university work began to intensify, particularly in my cardio and neuro subjects, with a busy schedule of exams. I also enjoyed spending time with friends, including a fun ice skating outing. Though I might not have looked as good at it on the camera as I thought I was in my head!
